2025 Homelessness Point in Time Count Released

2025 Homelessness Point in Time Count Released

This week the 2025 Homelessness Point in Time Count (PIT Count) was released by Housing Solutions. This annual count is held across the country in cities by counting the number of people experiencing homelessness on a given night in January. To no surprise, in Tulsa we showed 1,449 individuals unhoused this year, which is a 4% increase compared to 2024. Since 2022, the year we started our non-profit, Eden Village of Tulsa, the count has increased by 36% overall. This is why we rolled up our sleeves and stated working to do something about it, rather than just talking and complaining.

So, what should be our response to this data?  As Mayor Nichols said, “We know this problem continues to get worse and worse and worse, and so what we have in front of us is not necessarily a debate on the gravity of the problem — it’s a decision that we have as a community on what we’re going to do about it.” We decided 3 years ago to do our part in helping to solve the problem.  While we won’t solve the homeless problem with our little community, we will solve it for 63 folks, who are not living on the streets anymore.

This PIT Count is not perfect, and is not a real scientific poll, but it does give us good data and a benchmark from year to year.  We have data on shelter residents, but many people live in woods, under bridges, in cars, or couch surfing, making them hard to find on one night. This is not a criticism of the PIT Count, as it’s needed. Most people involved in homelessness though will tell you it’s a serious undercount, and in reality, the actual number is 2-4 times what is given. And we see it every day in Tulsa as we drive about anywhere in town.

Our focus at Eden Village is the chronically homeless individuals, with one year and often more of living without a home. In 2025, the chronic homelessness rate increased by 39%, a substantial and concerning number. We are providing assistance to these individuals because they have significant needs in terms of housing and recovery.

The 5 big takeaways as to the reasons for people being homeless are:

  1. Lack of affordable housing
  2. Loss of income/benefits
  3. Mental health issues
  4. Loss of job or employment
  5. Relationship breakdown (family)

I would add substance abuse issues to being a big factor, which affects one’s ability to gain employment and function normally.

At Eden Village, we are addressing all of these top 5 reasons. When they move in, they are not homeless anymore, and at a rate of $350/mo bills paid they can afford. We provide services from partner organizations to help with their mental health issues, physical health, and spiritual help. We’re all about community and building relationships with their neighbors, staff, and volunteers. We offer opportunities for individuals to learn new job skills, develop people skills, earn money, and contribute positively to the community.
