Oklahoma’s Largest Permeable Paving Project Completed at Eden Village
Tulsa has a homeless problem, and a variety of organizations have stepped up to the plate to provide a solution. Eden Village of Tulsa, a 17-acre gated community located at 1153 S. 61st W. Ave. in Tulsa with plans for 63 tiny homes, four currently onsite, with five more to be delivered soon to set on permanent foundations. In addition, the Helmerich Community Center being finished up now on the property where qualified mental health providers and other professional support staff will be available to the residents, along with a greenhouse and farm all designed to provide a permanent home for those without one.
With infrastructure in place and the community center nearing completion, the paving of the parking lot and walkways is now being completed. Eden Village President Brad Johnson is savvy from his years in business, and he knows how to research the best solution for each phase along the way to the finish line. Last year he decided upon using TruGrid, provided by Anchor Paving, which are re-cycled plastic panels are set in place – 21,000 of them to be exact—on top of 2000 tons of base gravel and then 400 tons of river rock to finish out. Anchor Stone in Tulsa donated all 2000 tons of base gravel towards supporting this project. With 7” of base gravel, and 2” of nice finish rock placed on top within these panels, the results are:
- TruGrid is 3 times stronger than asphalt, holding up well to traffic and heavy equipment.
- Permeable paving provided by TruGrid allows rainwater to penetrate through the rock layers and into the soil, where it belongs. No stormwater retention is needed, saving us money, and it’s good for the environment.
- With very little maintenance required compared to other methods, no potholes and cracks, we save money long-term.
- The brown decorative river rock looks great and is cooler compared to black asphalt. The panels are made from re-cycled plastic, helping the environment. This project is the largest of its kind in the state.
We’re about being innovative and doing things that are good for our new neighbors and the land we all share. This is the right way to do paving, and we’re excited to be on the leading edge in Tulsa with this new technology.
